Ray Johnson

To advertise his graphic design work ray johnson would mail around postcards and letters. From this he started a project where he would mail unfinished peices of his art to other artists, friends and strangers with the request to "please ADD to and RETURN." From this he inadvertently created the 'mail art' movement.

I then looked more into the mail art movement to see what other kind of works people created:

Mail Art stamp and envelope with official Colt Anniversary postmark – Chuck Welch, aka Cracker Jack Kid, 1984.

BRUNO CHIARLONE 3H 2008

Shozo Shimamoto
Collaged postcard by Cuan Miles, 2006
Looking at these works I liked the idea of creating an unfinished postcard to send out for people to complete. I liked the statement 'add to and return' and thought of incorperating in a postcard design maybe written on the front incouraging the clients, volunteers ect to write a message or drawing and keep resending the same postcard allowing the images to build up and overlap each other.
